Racing Genk’s European campaign suffered a setback as they were held to a draw by Standard Liège in the Belgium Pro League play-offs, despite taking an early lead through a well-taken free-kick by Marcus Nielsen.
The match, played on Sunday, April 26, 2026, saw Genk initially in control after Nielsen converted a set-piece to put them ahead. However, Standard Liège responded with a late goal to secure a 1-1 draw, leaving Genk frustrated after what appeared to be a promising position.
“Dit doet pijn”
Marcus Nielsen, Racing Genk
The result means Genk must now win their remaining play-off matches to have any chance of qualifying for European competition next season. Having missed out on the top six in the regular season, Genk entered the play-offs needing to win Play-off Two and then defeat one of the teams from the Champions’ Play-offs to earn a European ticket.
Standard Liège, who have had an inconsistent season themselves, will be among Genk’s closest challengers in the play-offs, alongside Westerlo. Both teams have shown mixed form throughout the campaign, making the race for the final European spot highly competitive.
Genk’s European hopes hinge on play-off performance
Genk have shown strength in away matches during their Europa League campaign this term, winning five of six games, including qualifying rounds. They have scored 15 away goals in European competition, a tally bettered only by Midtjylland’s 17.

However, their domestic form has been less impressive, and the draw against Standard Liège highlights the challenges they face in converting European-level performances to consistent league results. Genk will now face Westerlo, Standard Liège, Charleroi, Antwerp, and OH Leuven in the play-offs.
The team remains under pressure to deliver results, with coach Nicky Hayen emphasizing the importance of securing wins in the remaining fixtures to keep their European aspirations alive.
