According to reporting from ANSA, the names of the 43 victims scrolled across a regional LED wall in Liguria while regional figures, including Liguria budget councilor Marco Bucci, marked the solemn milestone. Bucci noted that eight years ago, Genoa was struck at its heart, recalling the profound loss felt across the community when the Polcevera Viaduct gave way during a violent storm.

Representatives for the victims’ families voiced frustration to ANSA regarding attendance at the anniversary observance. Families stated they had expected a central figure of the Italian state to be present in Genoa to honor those who died, pointing to a perceived absence of top-tier national leadership at the memorial site.

Despite the somber occasion and the ongoing grief, the families indicated they are looking forward to the judicial appeals process with a heightened sense of trust.
