A Pioneer’s Global Perspective in Pedigree Analysis
Geoff Powell, a name synonymous with innovation in the Thoroughbred industry, is being celebrated as a true pioneer for his groundbreaking work in computerising pedigrees and establishing a global standard for racing data. His foresight in gathering information from across the world, rather than focusing solely on domestic scenes, laid the foundation for the accuracy and comprehensiveness that the industry relies on today.
“He didn’t focus on his own backyard, he saw the whole world,” saeid Arion Pedigrees’ Managing Director Kyla Johnston. “He (Geoff Powell) deserves recognition as a pioneer. Geoff saw the whole picture and the value of getting data from all over the world.”
From wellington to the World Stage
Powell’s journey began in wellington, where his academic prowess was evident from a young age. He started his career in yearling planning before venturing overseas in the late 1970s. His move to the UK saw him take on a role as a pedigree writer with the now-defunct British Bloodstock Agency in Newmarket. During this time,he pursued a computing degree through Open Universities,a testament to his dedication and forward-thinking approach.
his career progressed when he joined the bloodstock division of Weatherbys. Here, Powell was instrumental in establishing their database and spearheading the digital change of their internal systems. This early work in digitisation set a precedent for how the industry would manage and access vital information.
Founding Arion Pedigrees: A Legacy of Data
in the mid-1980s,Powell returned to New Zealand with a mission to lead Wrightson Bloodstock’s computerisation project. After a decade of dedicated work with the company, he, along with colleague Chas Amon, founded Arion Pedigrees. This venture marked a pivotal moment, establishing the groundwork for the future of racing data and pedigree analysis.
Kyla Johnston, who joined the Arion team in 2007, took over leadership from Powell in 2009, allowing him to continue his work remotely from England. Johnston fondly recalls Powell’s unique contribution: “Geoff was unique. What he created and did for the industry was remarkable. When no one else was doing it, he computerised pedigrees, starting at Weatherbys, then Wrightsons.”
A Quiet Visionary’s Enduring Impact
Powell’s strength lay in his ability to forge new paths and innovate in areas where solutions did not yet exist.”He walked his own path. That’s where his strength was, seeing new pathways and finding ways to do something when it didn’t yet exist,” Johnston stated.
Powell understood the critical need for accurate, global data, not just for the creation of pedigrees in catalogues but for broader industry analysis. Arion Pedigrees, under his pioneering vision, became a world leader in this field. The company’s name itself, Arion, a half-brother to the mythical pegasus, reflects Powell’s penchant for meaningful and evocative naming.
Every time industry professionals and enthusiasts log onto Arion to check a pedigree, analyze a prosperous cross, or consult a sales catalog with confidence in its global accuracy, they are benefiting from Geoff Powell’s legacy. A quiet visionary, he combined a passion for puzzles with extraordinary technical skill, building the essential backbone of pedigree systems for numerous Thoroughbred organisations before establishing Arion. This data-driven business fundamentally changed the game for the racing industry.
Though intensely private, Geoff Powell leaves behind a legacy that will continue to be felt every time a horse’s lineage is traced. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and benefiting from his transformative work.
