Former national and Olympic swimming coach George Gibney is set to return to Ireland to face a significant number of charges related to the alleged sexual abuse of four young girls. The extradition marks a pivotal moment in a case that has spanned decades.
Gibney’s Return to Ireland
george Gibney, 77, is expected to arrive in Ireland imminently, escorted by Gardaí from the United States where he has resided for over 30 years. Upon his arrival, he will be formally charged and brought before Dublin District Court. Gibney has no prior convictions and will be eligible to apply for bail. Crucially, once charged, he is legally entitled to anonymity unless convicted.
The Charges Against Gibney
The charges against Mr. Gibney are extensive, totaling 79. These include 78 counts of indecent assault against four girls and one count of attempted rape. According to documents filed with a US district court, the alleged victims were between the ages of eight and 14 at the time of the offenses, and Mr. Gibney was their coach. Dublin District Court issued 79 arrest warrants on june 6, 2023, one for each alleged offense.
Extradition Process and Legal Proceedings
Mr. Gibney was arrested by US marshals earlier this month and has appeared before Judge Daniel irick in Florida. He waived his right to contest his extradition on July 10, agreeing to return to Ireland. The US attorney had previously indicated an intention to oppose bail, citing Gibney’s refusal to engage with an Garda Síochána and his decline of a voluntary interview in June 2021. Court documents describe him as a “flight risk and a danger to the community,” noting that he “was able to evade the inquiry of these allegations in Ireland” after relocating to the United States following the dismissal of an earlier set of allegations. The Irish Embassy in Washington had formally requested his extradition in october of the previous year.
Renewed Complaints and Podcast Influence
US court documents reveal that all four alleged victims came forward to gardaí between 2020 and 2022. This renewed engagement followed the broadcast of a BBC podcast titled ‘Where is George Gibney?’. The complaints were officially lodged on February 4,August 2,September 29,2021,and July 20,2022. It is indeed vital to note that these four individuals were not part of a 1994 case against Mr. Gibney, during which he obtained a High Court injunction preventing the Director of Public Prosecutions from proceeding with charges against him.
