Ipswich native George Pinner, 38, has retired from hockey after a distinguished career representing Great Britain and England. Pinner made 195 appearances and participated in the 2016 Olympic Games. He also secured two Commonwealth Games bronze medals in 2014 and 2018.
Pinner initially stepped back from international play in 2021 to concentrate on domestic hockey, including seven English Hockey League titles, three with Old Georgians. Now, he says he is ready to prioritize family life.
Pinner reflected on his career, emphasizing the camaraderie and shared experiences with teammates. He noted the speed with which his playing days passed, saying that he is only now fully appreciating his accomplishments.
“When you know,you know,” Pinner said,describing his decision to retire.
”It was very clear to me halfway through this season that the end of the season would be the time to stop [playing],” Pinner said.
“The teammates that become very close friends, the celebrations afterwards, the laughs in the changing rooms. Those are the things that I will miss the most,” he said.
“It’s only now that I look and think, ‘wow, did I really experience all of that?’ If you told me at 14 [years old] that I’d go on to achieve even a quarter of that [my accomplishments], I’d be delighted,” pinner said.

While planning a break from the sport, Pinner is open to a future role in hockey. He expressed interest in mentoring young players and sharing his expertise.
