Trainer George Scott and jockey Callum Shepherd are eager to return to Royal Ascot, hoping to replicate their success from last year. Scott, who trains at Eve Lodge Stables in Newmarket, anticipates entering nine or 10 horses over the four-day meet. He expressed optimism about his team’s chances. The Royal Ascot role is a big one for the stable.
“It’s such a special meeting, it’s like no other week in racing - you coudl sort of equate it to FA Cup finals, Ryder Cups and things like that,” Scott said.
Scott became a trainer a decade ago, and 2024 marked his moast successful year, with 48 victories both at home and internationally. Isle Of Jura’s win was a significant part of that success. The Royal Ascot role is a coveted one.
For Shepherd, the victory was especially meaningful. It came shortly after the death of his friend and fellow jockey Stefano Cherchi, who died following a fall in Australia. Shepherd had also been replaced as the rider of Ambiente friendly for the 2024 Derby at Epsom, where the horse finished second.
“It’s the best moment I’ve ever had on a horse, the best moment I’ve ever had in sport,” Shepherd said, recalling the victory.He added that the win “set the tone” for a successful second half of the season, including winter wins in Dubai, Bahrain, and the German St Leger.
