Wendt, a beloved figure in comedy, passed away on May 20, according to a death certificate released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
The certificate detailed that congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, and hypertension were underlying conditions contributing to the cardiac arrest. News of the “Cheers” star’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from former co-stars and fans alike.
Ted Danson, who starred alongside Wendt in “Cheers,” expressed his sorrow, saying, “I am devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us… It is going to take me a long time to get used to this. I love you, georgie.” Rhea Perlman, also a “Cheers” co-star, remembered Wendt as “the sweetest, kindest man I ever met.”
Born in Chicago on October 17, 1948, George Wendt’s journey to stardom included a stint with the Second City improvisational theater troupe, where he met his wife, Bernadette Birkett. She later appeared on “Cheers.” Wendt’s portrayal of Norm earned him six Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Wendt also reprised his role as Norm in other shows, including “St. Elsewhere,” “Frasier,” and “Family Guy.” His other television credits include “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,” “Portlandia,” and “The Goldbergs.”
Jason Sudeikis, star of “Ted Lasso,” is Wendt’s nephew. Wendt once shared that he approached his “Cheers” audition aiming to embody “a guy who wanted to have another beer.”
“Norm is just me with better writing,” Wendt said in 2021. “There were hundreds, if not thousands, of actors who could have delivered on the absolute gems that I was handed on a silver platter every Wednesday morning.”
