Georgia Griffin’s Journey in Thoroughbred Racing

Georgia Griffin grew up in a horse-loving family. Her parents, Greg and Jo Griffin, started Lime Country Thoroughbreds when she was young. They initially focused on raising sheep and beef but later expanded into thoroughbred racing.

In 2007, the Griffins began their boutique stud operation. They offered services like breaking, pretraining, and spelling horses. Their breeding business quickly flourished, making them leading consignors in New Zealand. Georgia’s early experiences with thoroughbreds began in the spelling and broodmare paddocks. The horse that left a strong impression on her was Mufhasa, a champion gelding.

Mufhasa raced between 2007 and 2013, winning 20 races, including 10 Group 1 victories. Georgia recalls his success during the Hawkes Bay Carnival and remembers female jockeys riding him. Meeting Mufhasa’s owner, David Archer, introduced her to the excitement of racehorses.

Growing up, Georgia often helped her parents on the farm. Though she sometimes found it disappointing, she grew to love the work. She found joy in transforming yearlings into successful racehorses. Bright Flight, a filly she particularly admired, sold for $600,000 at the 2020 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

In 2017, Lime Country Thoroughbreds moved to Australia. Georgia initially stayed in New Zealand for four months before joining her family in Australia. She balanced her business studies at Wollongong University with her responsibilities at the farm.

After graduating, Georgia worked with trainer John O’Shea, where she developed new skills in a racing stable. Later, she became a racing manager with Triple Crown Syndications, connecting with horse owners and enjoying notable successes with Mazu and Revolutionary Miss.

In 2023, Georgia returned to the sales circuit. She joined Bjorn Baker Racing, taking a role that combined her passions for breeding and racing. She works closely with owners, sharing updates on their horses and helping select new stars in the sales ring.

Georgia found fulfillment in her role, enjoying the blend of breeding, sales, and racing. A special horse she loves is O’ Ole, a 2-year-old with promising potential. Georgia values her work, as it allows her to engage in all aspects of the thoroughbred industry, blending her interests and passions.
