A recent poll indicates a significant partisan divide among Georgia voters regarding the potential for federal control of elections, while state and federal authorities continue to engage in disputes over the administration of voting in Fulton County.

According to an exclusive poll conducted by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 98% of Democratic primary voters in Georgia somewhat or strongly disapprove of the idea of federal control over elections. Republican voters are more divided on the issue, with 48% stating they somewhat or strongly disapprove of a federal takeover. An additional 7% of Republicans reported they did not know or did not have an opinion.

The polling comes amid continued discussions regarding the nationalization of elections in certain states. While the majority of Georgia voters across party lines express opposition to federal intervention, the data suggests a notable segment of the Republican electorate does not oppose the concept.

These tensions over election authority are manifesting in specific legal and administrative actions within the state, particularly in Fulton County. In January 2026, the FBI conducted a raid at a warehouse in Fulton County to seize hundreds of boxes of records related to the 2020 election.

The raid occurred more than five years after the 2020 election, during a period when those results had already undergone multiple investigations and repeated recounts. The action was part of an effort by the Trump administration to obtain voter data from the states.

Fulton County Commissioner Dana Barrett characterized the FBI’s actions as political theater rather than a standard criminal investigation.

Beyond federal intervention, You’ll see active efforts at the state level to shift control of local election processes. A Republican state lawmaker has called for the Georgia State Election Board to take over the administration of elections in Fulton County.

This push for a state-level takeover coincides with changes in the composition of the State Election Board. Members associated with the “Stop the Steal” movement now hold positions of power on the board, which had previously been described as a sleepy administrative body.

The focus on election integrity has also reached the White House, where a lawyer is currently overseeing the federal government’s election integrity efforts. This official, previously a private practice attorney known for handling long-shot election cases, has faced judicial scrutiny for his previous legal work.

A court previously sanctioned the official for making assertions regarding voting that were described as

“unequivocally false”

The overlap of federal raids, state-level takeover proposals, and the appointment of election-denial advocates to oversight roles has created a volatile environment as Georgia approaches the 2026 midterm elections.

While the AJC poll shows that nearly half of Republicans disapprove of federal control, the combination of the January FBI raid and the current White House leadership suggests a continuing push toward centralized oversight of election data and procedures.
