Georgia’s EU Accession Suspended: A Step Back from European Integration
Georgian Dream has suspended Georgia’s EU accession process. This decision breaks the promise to the Georgian people in their constitution to pursue integration with the European Union and NATO. By halting the process, Georgian Dream has turned away from closer ties with Europe, making Georgia more open to influence from Russia.
Many Georgians support stronger connections with Europe. The United States condemns the police’s harsh response to peaceful protesters expressing their rights. The U.S. urges all parties to ensure that protests stay non-violent.
Georgian Dream’s actions go against the principles of the U.S.-Georgia Strategic Partnership. This partnership was built on shared values like democracy, the rule of law, civil society, respect for human rights, and efforts against corruption. Due to these violations, the United States has paused this partnership.
The U.S. calls on the Georgian government to return to its path toward Euro-Atlantic integration. It urges the government to investigate election irregularities and repeal laws that limit assembly and expression.
