Georgia’s Government Faces Protests Amid EU Membership Tensions and Allegations of Election Fraud

Georgia’s Government Faces Protests Amid EU Membership Tensions and Allegations of Election Fraud

November 29, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

Georgia Faces Protests and Tensions Over EU Membership

On a recent Thursday, the Georgian government showed its true stance regarding EU membership. Ucha Nanuashvili, a Georgian citizen and vice president of the International Federation for Human Rights in Paris, expressed that the ruling party, Georgian Dream, is not a supporter of the EU and does not intend for Georgia to join.

The European Parliament threatened sanctions and demanded new elections, which led to the pro-Russian government suspending discussions about EU negotiations. Protests erupted in Tbilisi and other cities, resulting in clashes between police and demonstrators.

Key Developments:

  • On November 28, the Georgian government announced it would halt EU membership talks until 2028.
  • Georgian Dream has strengthened ties with Russia, increasing tensions with Brussels.
  • Protests occurred in Tbilisi and other cities following this announcement.
  • Georgia’s pro-Western president condemned the government’s latest stance on the EU.
  • The European Parliament demanded the annulment of the recent parliamentary elections over fraud allegations. Georgian Dream received nearly 54% of the vote.
  • Western nations seek an independent investigation into the alleged electoral irregularities.
  • Georgian Dream insists the elections were free and fair.
  • In December 2023, Georgia received candidate status for EU membership but was warned that new laws influenced by Russia, such as the “foreign agents” law and restrictions on LGBT rights, are not compatible with EU membership.

Violent Clashes and Arrests
Authorities deployed water cannons during the protests, and reports indicated violence against demonstrators, including the arrest of over 20 journalists. A total of 43 arrests were made. The situation remains tense with continued gatherings outside the parliament in Tbilisi.

Future of Protests
Nanuashvili mentioned the uncertainty of the protests’ future. Even though the government is using force, he believes that many Georgians will continue to fight against Russian influence.

President Salome Zourabichvili, a supporter of EU integration, joins protesters in Tbilisi. She has encouraged resistance to the prevailing government stance, asserting the people’s desire for EU membership.

Mixed Support for the Government
Comments from various observers highlight a significant gap between the citizens’ desires and the government’s actions. Ana Pashalishvili, a senior advisor for the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, noted that over 80% of Georgians want EU membership, and the current government is contradicting the will of the people.

The government has faced criticism for playing on fears of conflict with Russia, comparing the situation in Georgia to the ongoing issues in Ukraine. Pashalishvili believes protests will persist despite government violence, driven by the urgency to secure a future aligned with Europe.

International Reactions
Many international leaders express solidarity with Georgian protesters. The presidents of Lithuania and Latvia have voiced support for the Georgian people’s European aspirations, condemning the government’s violent responses to demonstrations. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has also expressed concern over the treatment of peaceful protesters.

In summary, protests in Georgia reflect a deep division between the citizens’ pro-EU aspirations and the government’s alignment with Russian interests. The struggle for a European future is central to the ongoing unrest.
