Georgia’s Political Crisis: Election Results Disputed as Opposition Boycotts Parliament
On October 26, the parliamentary elections in Georgia resulted in a victory for the “Georgian Dream” party, according to official results. However, opposition parties and President Zurabishvili reject these results, claiming they are fraudulent, and are boycotting the newly elected parliament.
Zurabishvili argues that the new parliament is unconstitutional. She is seeking to annul the election results through the Constitutional Court.
Political tensions escalated when Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that Georgia would suspend EU membership talks until the end of 2028.
The “Georgian Dream” party’s members voted to keep Kobakhidze as Prime Minister, disregarding concerns about the new parliament’s legitimacy.
Zurabishvili stated, “There is no legitimate parliament, and therefore, an illegitimate parliament cannot elect a new president. Inauguration cannot happen, and my mandate will continue until a legitimately elected parliament is formed.”
