Geraint Thomas of Ineos Grenadiers endured a challenging Stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse. A crash ⁤during the⁤ final third of the 195.6km route tested the veteran cyclist, but he managed to finish with the help of his teammates.

The incident occurred with just under 60km remaining as the peloton approached a left-hand bend near magdalenau. Thomas went down after hitting the pavement’s edge in what he described as a self-inflicted crash.

“I just hit a lip on the⁤ side of the⁣ road, really. It’s my fault,” Thomas told SRF after the stage. “Then I just kind of got my foot caught behind me, and I twisted my knee and my hamstring, and it was a dead leg.I struggled to just bend it for ⁤the first minute or⁢ so,but then, yeah, once⁣ I got on the bike and got rolling,it freed up a⁣ bit.”

After a swift check by the race medical car, ⁤teammates Bob Jungels, Andrew ‘AJ’ august, and lucas Hamilton supported Thomas in ⁢his effort to rejoin the main group. He appeared to struggle for about 10km approaching the Appenzell climb.

With 35km to go, Emiel Verstrynge,‍ Samuele Battistella, Brent Van Moer, and Quinn ‍Simmons⁣ broke away. Thomas, along with August and ‍Jungels, trailed by 1 minute, 45 seconds.

Simmons then launched a solo attack with 20km remaining. August and ⁣Jungels stayed with Thomas, finishing the uphill stage in a large group, 15 minutes, 1 second behind Simmons.

“Yeah, ‍just a bit sore, the muscles and stuff⁤ a bit strained. But it’s all OK,” Thomas said.

Thomas, the 2022 tour de Suisse winner,⁣ is using this year’s race to prepare for the Tour de⁣ France. In 2022,‌ the Tour de Suisse helped propel him to a third-place finish in the Tour de‌ France. This marks his first return to the ⁣Swiss stage race since that triumphant year.

What’s ⁤next

Thomas will continue to monitor his ⁤condition as the Tour de Suisse progresses, with his sights set on the upcoming Tour de⁤ France.
