Scientists at King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia conducted a two-part study to investigate the anticonvulsant effects of geraniol.
First,they tested geraniol on nerve cells (PC12 cells) in a lab setting. These cells where treated with glutamate, a neurotransmitter that can trigger seizures when present in excess. Geraniol was found to protect the cells from glutamate-induced damage.
The researchers then moved to live animal models, using mice to study the effects of geraniol on pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced seizures. PTZ is a chemical that can trigger seizures in animals, mimicking certain types of epilepsy.
Geraniol was administered to the mice before PTZ, and the researchers observed a significant reduction in seizure activity. They also found that geraniol boosted levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter that has calming effects on the brain, and reduced levels of inflammatory molecules associated with seizures.
The study suggests that geraniol may work by enhancing the GABAergic pathway, a key system in the brain that regulates neuronal excitability. This pathway is often disrupted in people with epilepsy.
“Our findings indicate that geraniol possesses anticonvulsant properties, potentially through its ability to modulate GABAergic neurotransmission, reduce oxidative stress, and suppress neuroinflammation,” said lead researcher Nancy S. Younis.
While these results are promising, more research is needed to determine the safety and effectiveness of geraniol as a treatment for seizures in humans.
