Washington D.C. – In a rare phone call, General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, spoke with his Russian counterpart, General Valery Gerasimov, on Wednesday, just one day before Thanksgiving. The call came six days after Russia launched a new ballistic missile, the “Oreshnik,” into Ukraine, allegedly in retaliation for the U.S. and Britain supplying Ukraine with ATACMS long-range missiles to target Russian military installations.
During the conversation, Gerasimov reportedly told Milley that the launch of the ”Oreshnik” missile had been planned long before the Biden administration approved UkraineS use of ATACMS missiles against targets within Russia.
Captain Jerrell Dorsey, press secretary for General Brown, told reporters that “at the request of General Gerasimov, General Brown agreed not to announce the call in advance.”
Dorsey added that the two generals “discussed a range of issues related to global and regional security, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.”
