A jury in Honolulu found Gerhardt Konig, a 47-year-old anesthesiologist from Maui, guilty of attempted manslaughter based on extreme mental or emotional disturbance on April 8, 2026. The conviction follows a three-week trial regarding an attack on his wife, Arielle Konig, during a hike on the island of Oahu in March 2025.

Konig had previously pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree attempted murder. While the jury did not convict him on the more serious charge, which carries a potential life sentence, they returned a verdict on the lesser charge of attempted manslaughter. This conviction carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Details of the March 2025 Incident

The charges stemmed from an incident on March 24, 2025, while the couple was walking along the Pali Puka trail on Oahu for Arielle Konig’s birthday. Prosecutors alleged that Gerhardt Konig assaulted his wife near a cliffside, pushing her toward the edge and beating her multiple times with a rock.

During the trial, Arielle Konig testified that her husband stabbed her with a needle, hit her several times with a lava rock, and attempted to push her off a cliff.

Gerhardt Konig provided a conflicting account while testifying. He claimed that his wife was the aggressor during the hike, stating that she struck him with a rock and tried to push him over the cliff. He testified that he hit her in self-defense.

Jury Deliberations and Legal Nuances

The jury began deliberations on April 7, 2026, after hearing testimony from both the defendant and his wife. They were instructed to evaluate the second-degree attempted murder charge first and then consider lesser offenses, including assault, if they could not find him guilty of the primary charge.

The final verdict of attempted manslaughter based on extreme mental or emotional disturbance was unexpected for the legal teams. Megan Kau, a defense attorney and former prosecutor not involved in the case, noted that neither the prosecution nor the defense had argued for the application of extreme mental or emotional distress.

Prosecutor Joel Garner stated that the office respects the verdict and the jury’s consideration of the evidence and the burden of proof.

Sentencing and Appeal

Gerhardt Konig will remain in custody until his sentencing, which is scheduled for August 13, 2026.

Defense attorney Thomas Otake informed reporters that he intends to appeal the conviction. Otake cited many appellate issues regarding several of the judge’s rulings throughout the case, although he expressed gratitude that the jury did not convict his client of attempted murder.
