Asunción, Paraguay – The Faculty of Medical Sciences at the National University of Asunción (UNA)⁣ launched a new geriatrics office at the Clinic hospital on October 3, 2024. The office provides comprehensive care for individuals aged 60⁢ and over, addressing a range of age-related health concerns.

Services are available on Fridays during morning and afternoon hours, requiring appointments scheduled through the Medical‍ Clinic.The initiative ⁣aims to improve the health and well-being of Paraguay’s growing senior population.

Leadership ⁢and Interdisciplinary Approach

The geriatrics office is led by Dr. Natalia Franco, General Coordinator of the Specialization Program in Geriatrics and Gerontology, and Dr. Jesy Ruiz, the program’s Academic ⁤Coordinator. The team also includes resident doctors currently⁣ undergoing specialized⁣ training.

Dr. Franco emphasized the office’s commitment to an ⁤interdisciplinary approach. “We address frequent pathologies in older adults such as falls, ⁤memory alterations, mobility problems, nutrition, and pain, alongside common chronic diseases,” she stated. The office collaborates wiht specialists in⁣ physiotherapy, nutrition, psychology, and other relevant fields to provide holistic patient care.

Training the Next Generation ‍of Geriatric Specialists

The ⁢opening⁤ of the geriatrics office is a notable step forward for the‍ Postgraduate Program in ‍Geriatrics and Gerontology at the UNA’s⁤ faculty of Medical Sciences.The two-year specialization program ⁤currently trains residents from internal medicine and family medicine backgrounds.

The office provides a dedicated clinical setting for these residents to gain practical experience ⁢under the guidance of experienced geriatricians. This hands-on training⁣ is crucial for developing the skills needed to address the unique healthcare needs of older adults.
