Gerindra Agrees with Prabowo’s Proposal for Governors to be Elected by Regional Councils
Gerindra Backs Prabowo’s Proposal for DPRD-Selected Governors, Citing high Election Costs
Jakarta – Gerindra Party Secretary General Ahmad Muzani has voiced the party’s support for President prabowo Subianto’s proposal to have governors selected by regional legislatures (DPRD) rather of direct elections. While Gerindra agrees with the concept, Muzani emphasized that further study and discussion are needed before any changes are implemented.
“Gerindra has no problem with the idea of governors being chosen by the DPRD. We support it,” Muzani stated after attending the National Working Meeting (Silaknas) of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI) in Bogor, West Java. “Though,as the recent regional elections have just concluded,we suggest conducting thorough studies and discussions in the DPR (house of Representatives) starting in 2025.”
Muzani hopes that ICMI will contribute it’s insights and perspectives to inform the government’s deliberations on this matter.
“We hope that ICMI members will also share their views with the government to facilitate these studies,” Muzani said. “This will allow the government and the legislature to gather diverse perspectives before making any decisions.”
The proposal to change the system of electing governors stems from concerns about the high costs associated with direct elections. Muzani highlighted that the essence of democracy should be public service, not exorbitant expenses.
“During the recent regional elections, almost all candidates, both winners and losers, complained about the high costs involved,” Muzani explained.”This makes our democracy excessively expensive, whereas the ultimate goal of democracy is service to the people. Service implies a willingness to dedicate oneself to the nation and its citizens.”
Muzani further connected the proposal to the relatively low voter turnout in the 2024 regional elections, suggesting a correlation between high costs and reduced public participation.
“Voter turnout averaged around 60%, which is considered low,” Muzani noted. “Elections are expensive, and this financial burden adds to the overall economic cost. These factors are interconnected.”
He believes that selecting governors through the DPRD could possibly lead to cost savings and increased efficiency.
