Drone Strike Injures Journalists Reporting with Ukrainian Unit
Correspondent Philipp naber adn his team were reporting on an air defence unit within Ukraine’s 42nd Brigade when a Russian Lancet-type drone struck a nearby military vehicle. The incident, which occurred in an open area, resulted in the death of one Ukrainian soldier and serious injuries to another. Naber, cameraman viktor, and producer Ivan were also impacted; Naber and Viktor sustained minor injuries, while Ivan suffered two deep shrapnel wounds to his leg. Doctors anticipate Ivan will regain the ability to walk.
the Changing Landscape of War Journalism
Naber highlighted how the proliferation of drones has fundamentally altered the risks faced by war correspondents. He described the creation of a “death zone” extending 10 to 12 kilometers from the front lines, were drone attacks can occur at any time. He contrasted this with conditions in February 2023 near Bakhmut, when journalists could approach within 2 to 2.5 kilometers of Russian positions. “It’s impossible now,” Naber stated, “the first attack drones would arrive in five minutes.”
Rising Toll for Journalists in Ukraine
The International federation of Journalists (IFJ) documented four journalist deaths in Ukraine during 2023 as an inevitable result of the conflict initiated by Russia in February 2022 IFJ Report on Journalist Safety in Ukraine.
