German Open 2026: Kicklitz Reaches Round of 16, Duo Eliminated | Badminton News
The 2026 German Open presented a mixed bag of results for Malaysian badminton players, with doubles teams largely succeeding while singles competitors struggled, according to reports from Thursday, February 26th. While several Malaysian pairs advanced to the second round, key singles players faced early exits.
Men’s singles player Leong Jun Hao suffered his second first-round defeat in three tournaments this year, falling to Taiwan’s Chi Yu Jen 21-18, 5-21, 20-22. This continues a pattern of early-round struggles for Leong, who frequently exited in the opening rounds of BWF World Tour championships in 2023. Compatriot Justin Hoh also lost, going down to Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu 17-21, 21-12, 8-21 at the Westenergie Sporthalle in Mulheim.
However, the Malaysian doubles teams provided a brighter outlook. Multiple men’s and mixed doubles pairings secured their places in the second round, scheduled for later Thursday and early Friday. The men’s doubles teams of Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, Aaron Chia- Soh Wooi Yik, and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani all achieved convincing victories in their opening matches. Notably, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani are guaranteed a quarter-final spot, as they will face off against Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi in the next round.
In mixed doubles, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai and Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing also progressed to the last 16 with comfortable wins over Dutch and Danish rivals, respectively. The success of these pairs offers a positive sign for Malaysia’s doubles program.
The women’s singles competition saw a split outcome for the Malaysian contingent. K Letshanaa lost a hard-fought match against Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki 9-21, 21-15, 11-21, lasting an hour. Wong Ling Ching, however, managed to secure a victory, defeating India’s Tanvi Sharma 21-19, 17-21, 21-16.
Elsewhere at the German Open, Canada experienced setbacks with the withdrawal of Gao Fang Jie and Michelle Li, as reported on February 18th. Nguyen Thuy Linh of Vietnam also withdrew from the competition. Nozomi Okuhara also withdrew.
The tournament also saw success for Singaporean players. Loh Kean Yew and Jason Teh both won their round-of-16 matches on February 27th, overcoming Malaysian opponents. Loh defeated Cheam June Wei 19-21, 21-13, 21-12, while Teh outlasted Justin Hoh 18-21, 21-19, 21-12. This sets up a quarter-final clash between the two Singaporean players, a first for them on the BWF World Tour.
Loh Kean Yew, seeded second, is looking to regain form after a slump following the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he also reached the quarter-finals. Prior to the German Open, he had only won five of fifteen matches and suffered six first-round exits in BWF World Tour events. He had shown some improvement with quarter-final appearances at the Denmark Open in October 2024 and the India Open in January.
The German Open represents an important opportunity for players to gain ranking points and build momentum as the badminton season progresses. The contrasting fortunes of the Malaysian singles and doubles teams highlight the strengths and weaknesses within the national program, while the success of Loh Kean Yew and Jason Teh signals a potential resurgence for Singaporean badminton.
