German Play in Ventspils: Truth, Lies & a Courtroom Drama

Ventspils, Latvia – A compelling courtroom drama by German playwright Ferdinand von Schirach is captivating audiences at the “Juras Varti” (Sea Gate) Theatre in Ventspils. The play, titled “He Said, She Said,” explores the complexities of relationships, consent, and societal judgment in a gripping narrative that leaves audiences questioning the nature of truth.

The production features a strong ensemble cast including Kristīne Nevarauska, Andris Bulis, Dainis Gaidelis, Juris Bartkevičs, Lauris Subatnieks, Ieva Segliņa, Indra Briķe, Marta Lovisa Jančevska, Meinards Liepiņš, Inga Alsiņa-Lasmane, Imants Strads, and Intars Stilbiņš. The story centers on Katarīna, a successful woman, and Kristians, a successful man, who embark on an affair despite both being married with children. Years later, after attempting to separate, a chance encounter reignites their connection, leading to an incident Katarīna describes as violent, while Kristians vehemently denies.

The ensuing legal battle forms the core of the play, presenting a series of conflicting testimonies and evidence. As the case unfolds, the personal lives of Katarīna and Kristians are laid bare, subjected to public scrutiny and societal preconceptions. The play doesn’t offer easy answers, instead presenting a nuanced exploration of power dynamics, perception, and the challenges of determining truth in a complex situation. The central question – “Who is ultimately telling the truth?” – remains unanswered, prompting reflection long after the curtain falls.

Director Dmitrijs Petrenko has been praised for his seemingly rational and suspenseful staging of the proceedings. Theatre critic Gundega Saulīte, writing after the play’s premiere last year, noted that Petrenko “managed to keep the audience in suspense throughout the play, without allowing them to consistently side with one or the other party.” Saulīte continued, stating that the open-ended finale “clearly demonstrates that the director’s intention was purposefully carried out and, it must be admitted, reaches its highest point in audience participation.”

Von Schirach, a lawyer by training, has quickly become a prominent figure in contemporary German literature. His work is characterized by its meticulous attention to legal procedure and its exploration of moral ambiguities. “He Said, She Said” is particularly resonant in the wake of the #MeToo movement, raising difficult questions about consent, victimhood, and the complexities of sexual relationships. The play has been adapted for the screen and successfully staged in numerous European theaters, indicating its broad appeal and enduring relevance.

The play’s exploration of societal values and prejudices is particularly striking. The narrative doesn’t shy away from challenging conventional notions of victimhood and culpability, forcing audiences to confront their own biases and assumptions. The play’s strength lies in its ability to present multiple perspectives without offering a definitive judgment, leaving the audience to grapple with the moral complexities of the situation.

The Ventspils production is organized by SIA “Kurzemes filharmonija” with the support of the Ventspils City Council and the State Culture Capital Foundation. Tickets are available through all “Biļešu paradīzes” outlets and online at bilesuparadize.lv. Attendees are advised that photography and video recording may occur during the performance for promotional purposes, and the resulting materials may be used on the theatre’s website and social media channels.

Von Schirach’s background as a practicing lawyer informs the play’s authenticity and procedural accuracy. He doesn’t simply present a sensationalized drama; he crafts a meticulously researched and realistically portrayed legal proceeding. This commitment to detail adds to the play’s impact, making the moral dilemmas feel all the more urgent and relevant.

The success of “He Said, She Said” speaks to a growing appetite for thought-provoking theatre that tackles complex social issues. The play’s ability to spark dialogue and challenge assumptions makes it a significant contribution to contemporary dramatic literature. The Ventspils production offers Latvian audiences a chance to experience this powerful and timely work firsthand.

Composer Carlos Cipa performed in Ventspils and Daugavpils, Latvia in April 2014, though this performance is unrelated to the current production of “He Said, She Said.” Cipa recently released a new album, “The Book of Sounds,” featuring interpretations of works by Hans Otte.
