Researchers Study the Effects of Risk Factors on Lifespan
Researchers have investigated how the absence or control of cardiovascular disease risk factors impacts lifespan. A German-led team analyzed data from over two million people across 39 countries, published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
The study focused on five classic risk factors responsible for roughly half of all cardiovascular diseases worldwide:
* High blood pressure
* smoking
* Diabetes
* Underweight or overweight
* High cholesterol levels
People with risk factors live over a decade shorter.
The results showed that individuals with all five risk factors by age 50 had a considerably increased risk of developing heart or circulatory disease. Specifically:
* men with all risk factors had an average lifespan 11.8 years shorter.
* Women with all risk factors had an average lifespan 14.5 years shorter.
This suggests these risk factors may be even more impactful for women than for men, with a difference of 10.6 years for men and 13.3 years for women in terms of developing heart or circulatory disease.
The article then mentions prof. Dr. Ulrich Laufs, director of the clinic and polyclinic for cardi… (the text is incomplete here).
