Germany Charges Four Hamas Members for Weapon Storage in Europe
Charges Filed Against Four Suspected Hamas Members in Germany
German federal prosecutors have charged four individuals believed to be associated with Hamas. These suspects are accused of sourcing and storing weapons for the Palestinian terrorist group in Europe.
The suspects include two men from Lebanon, an Egyptian national, and a Dutch citizen. They are charged with membership in a foreign terrorist organization. Prosecutors claim they held significant roles within the group, linking them directly to Hamas’s military leadership.
One suspect, identified only as Ibrahim El-R. from Lebanon, allegedly established a weapons storage site in Bulgaria in 2019. This site reportedly contained firearms, including a Kalashnikov assault rifle.
In mid-2019, Ibrahim El-R. is alleged to have emptied another weapons cache in Denmark, transporting a pistol to Germany. Between June and December 2023, all four suspects attempted to find another Hamas weapons store in Poland, but were unsuccessful.
Authorities state that Hamas has created underground weapons depots across several European nations. These depots are maintained by operatives with European residence permits, prepared for quick deployment.
Prosecutors noted that Hamas has targeted locations such as the Israeli embassy in Berlin and the US Air Base in Ramstein, viewing them as potential attack sites.
The suspects were arrested in December 2022, with the Dutch national Nazih R. detained in Rotterdam, while the others were apprehended in Berlin. Following Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in around 1,200 deaths, Germany prohibited Hamas activities and related organizations. This incident sparked ongoing conflict in Gaza.
