BERLIN – In his current term, President Trump questioned countries like Germany about not spending 2% of thier GDP on defense, despite NATO commitments.
“Well, I think it’s common sense, right?” Trump said, suggesting he wouldn’t defend nations that don’t pay.
Fueled by a new Trump presidency and the war in Europe, Germany, which has spent between 1% and 2% of its GDP on its military, is changing its constitution to free up funds for increased spending.
Two months after Trump’s comments, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz addressed parliament, stating, “Building up our military is our top priority,” said Merz. “From now on, the federal government will provide the military with as much money as it needs to ensure it becomes Europe’s strongest armed force… our partners not only expect this – they demand it.”
