Germany Strengthens Border Controls to Limit Illegal Migration and Enhance Internal Security
Germany’s Interior Minister, Nancy Feser, has implemented temporary controls at all of the country’s land borders to restrict the entry of individuals without a visa, as reported by various German media outlets, citing sources.
The decision to bolster border controls aims to address not only illegal migration but also to safeguard internal security from the threats of Islamic terrorism and cross-border crime, according to Berlin’s authorities.
The German government has informed the European Commission about the restrictions and is set to discuss new measures with the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, as reported by Bild.
A “model for effective forced return in accordance with European law” has been developed by the German government, expanding the possibility of deporting foreigners, although the details of this model remain undisclosed, as per DPA.
Currently, forced returns at Germany’s land borders are only permitted in specific cases, such as when an individual is refused entry to the country or has not applied for asylum.
According to the German Ministry of the Interior, over 30,000 people have been denied entry to the country since October 2023, when stationary controls were introduced at the country’s land borders.
