Germany Pledges Ukraine Missile Production Support Amid Rising Tensions
Updated may 29, 2025

Germany’s new chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has pledged to support Ukraine in teh production of long-range missiles to bolster its defense against Russian attacks. This commitment underscores Berlin’s strengthened support for Kyiv under its new leadership.
While declining to specify if Germany would supply taurus missiles, Merz stated in Berlin that discussions regarding production are underway, but details would remain private. The Taurus missile boasts a range of 310 miles, potentially reaching further into Russian territory than other long-range systems.
merz, who assumed office this month, has vowed to increase German assistance to Ukraine. He noted that Western allies had already removed range restrictions on supplied weaponry. A “memorandum of understanding” concerning long-range missiles is expected to be signed by the German and ukrainian defense ministers.
The Kremlin has warned that lifting range restrictions on missiles used by Ukraine would dangerously escalate the conflict and undermine prospects for a political resolution. However, Merz emphasized that the decision to lift these restrictions was made by Western allies months ago.
The new chancellor is adopting a more assertive stance on supporting ukraine compared to his predecessor, Olaf Scholz. This shift is evident in his willingness to make significant announcements that could potentially provoke the Kremlin.
During a press conference with Zelensky, Merz assured Ukraine of ongoing support and cautioned Moscow that its refusal to engage in further peace talks would face “real consequences.”
Zelensky has proposed peace talks involving himself, President Trump, and President Putin, but remains open to alternative formats. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that such a meeting could only occur after “concrete agreements” are reached between delegations.

Despite recent direct talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul, progress has been limited to a prisoner exchange. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Moscow is prepared for a second round of peace talks in Istanbul on June 2, were Russia would present its peace terms.
Lavrov said that he had briefed U.S.counterpart Marco Rubio on the proposal. He reiterated Moscow’s desire to guarantee Ukraine’s “neutral, non-aligned and non-nuclear status.”
Ukraine has stated that further meetings must yield tangible results. Defense Minister Rustem umerov announced that Ukraine has already submitted its peace terms to Russia and expects Moscow to reciprocate.
President Trump has expressed growing impatience with Russia’s lack of progress in peace talks, accusing Putin of “playing with fire” following a deadly missile strike that killed 13 Ukrainians. However, Russian officials suggested that Trump was not fully informed about the conflict’s context.
Zelensky has urged washington to impose sanctions on Russia’s banking and energy sectors, stating that Trump has “confirmed that if Russia does not stop, sanctions will be imposed.”

Amid diplomatic efforts, Ukraine reported significant drone attacks on Russian targets. Zelensky reported over 900 drones launched by russia over a three-day period. On the ground, Russian attacks have intensified in northeastern Ukraine.
Zelensky reported that Moscow is “amassing” over 50,000 troops along the Sumy front, where Russian forces have seized villages to create “security buffer zones.” Sumy Governor Oleh Hryhorov confirmed the seizure of four villages and ongoing fighting near other settlements.
The conflict, now in its fourth year, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and widespread destruction in eastern and southern Ukraine. Russia controls approximately one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory, including Crimea, annexed in 2014.
Zelensky has accused Moscow of delaying the peace process and failing to deliver a promised memorandum of peace terms. Peskov maintained that the document is in its “final stages.”
What’s next
The coming weeks will be critical as Germany and Ukraine work to finalize the missile production agreement. All eyes are on whether Russia and Ukraine can agree on terms for further peace negotiations, especially given the ongoing military actions and troop movements.
