Gerry Adams wins libel ‍case against BBC⁤ over ⁣spy murder claim

Updated May 30, ⁤2025

LONDON — Former Sinn‍ Fein President‍ Gerry Adams has won his libel case against ⁤the ‍BBC regarding a documentary that⁢ alleged‍ he sanctioned the 2006 murder of Denis Donaldson, a British spy. The Dublin⁣ High⁢ Court awarded Adams 100,000 euros ($113,000) in damages after nearly seven hours of deliberation.

The four-week trial examined Adams’ alleged involvement with the IRA and his role during the decades-long ⁢conflict in Northern⁢ Ireland known as the Troubles. Adams, 76, who served as Sinn fein’s president from 1983 to 2018, has consistently denied membership in the IRA.

The jury determined that the BBC‍ defamed Adams in a 2016 episode of the BBC Northern Ireland Spotlight documentary series ⁢and an accompanying online article. Adams contended that⁢ the BBC ⁤falsely claimed,⁢ based⁢ on ‍an anonymous source, that he authorized the murder of Donaldson, ⁣who‍ was shot in 2006 after being⁣ revealed⁢ as ‍an⁣ MI5 spy and former Sinn Fein official. The BBC’s defense,⁢ arguing that its journalism was ⁤fair, responsible, and in ⁣the public interest, was rejected.

Outside the court, ⁣Adams addressed reporters, stating the case aimed at “putting manners on the BBC.” He asserted that the ⁣BBC “upholds the ethos‍ of the ‍British state in Ireland” and remains “out of sync” with the Good Friday ⁣Agreement, the 1998 peace accord that ended the Troubles.
