Gerry Glasco, the Texas Tech softball coach, isn’t easily intimidated. Despite a Game 1 loss to Texas in the Women’s College World Series finals, Glasco remains unfazed.His journey to this point has been anything but conventional.
Glasco’s life took a turn when his hunting guide business in Mexico became too perilous due to escalating drug cartel conflicts. this led him to embrace college softball, a path he never initially envisioned. “Nothing about softball is scary to me,” Glasco said in April.
For over two decades, Glasco guided hunting and fishing trips in Mexico, balancing this with coaching his three daughters in softball. his oldest daughter, Tara Archibald, now his pitching coach at Texas Tech, recalls his dedication. “He would leave in October and he would come back in late February, early march, coming back for holidays and stuff,” Archibald said.
Though, by 2008, the situation in mexico had deteriorated. After an encounter with the Mexican army, Glasco was warned that the risks where too high to continue his business.this prompted his full-time commitment to softball.
Tragedy struck Glasco in 2019 when his youngest daughter,Geri ann,died in a car accident. This personal loss has shaped his perspective. ”Once you realize that you don’t have fear of failure to keep you from doing things, you realize there’s things you can’t understand,” Glasco said.
Archibald believes her late sister’s spirit is with the team. “I feel like Geri Ann’s really right here with us and sending us signs everywhere we go,” archibald said.
Glasco’s coaching style is characterized by aggressive strategies.harris-Champer noted Glasco’s penchant for daring plays.”He loves to steal home,” she said. “He loves to squeeze, loves to do things that are to force the offense, to force that aggression.”
