Gerry Hutch’s Political Aspirations: Claims of Neglect by Local TDs
In an interview with the Sunday Independent, Gerry Hutch criticized local political representatives, stating they have done little for the community. He highlighted that the area has had four TDs in recent years but has not benefited from their presence. Hutch remarked, “They’re politicians, but they’re doing shag all.”
Hutch, who founded Corinthians Boxing Club in Summerhill, recently submitted his registration forms to run in the upcoming election. Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon responded, asserting that Hutch may not recognize the efforts made to support the boxing club. Gannon stated, “Does Gerry Hutch know the work that I’ve had to do over the last number of years just to try and get the money together to pay the electricity for his own boxing club?”
Gannon challenged Hutch’s claims about his business success, emphasizing the difficulties faced to maintain support for local facilities. He criticized Hutch for not mentioning significant issues, such as the closure of a GP practice in the Summerhill Primary Care Centre. Gannon described the community as dealing with generational trauma, which he believes cannot be resolved by someone posing as a savior.
Gannon stated, “The dogged work is what happens after all the cameras switch off,” referring to the real efforts required to engage with the community and seek funding. He stands by his record as a TD and questioned Hutch’s engagement with local issues over the years.
Gannon is willing to debate Hutch, stating, “He’s on the ballot paper now, and I’m willing to debate him on the issues of the north of our city any time.” He acknowledged there might be some support for Hutch but believes voters want representatives who share their values.
At the launch of the Social Democrats’ education policy, Gannon emphasized the importance of positive role models in classrooms, stating, “Part of my love for education is it changed my life.” He aims to address real issues in the community through education and role models.
