The former rugby player feels the mental adjustments have greatly aided his game. This year, he has already secured three Players Championship titles, in addition to winning three nights in the Premier League. Price believes a more positive mindset has been key to his success.
Price noted that consulting with a sports psychologist before and during the World Championship was beneficial. Although he hasn’t spoken with the psychologist since, the changes in his thinking have had a lasting impact, making him more positive both in darts and in life.
The transformation in Price’s mindset has also led him to abandon some of his pre-match rituals. He explained that he no longer adheres to strict routines, such as placing his case and bottle top in the center of the table. He now believes that being too precise can create unneeded pressure.
“Even those little things where I’d put my case and the bottle top in the center of the table, everything had to be the same, I’ve gone away from that,” Price said.
Price emphasized the importance of doing the right things at the right time, rather than striving for perfection in every leg. He mentioned that he no longer obsesses over the position of his darts case, sometimes even leaving it open, as he recognizes that these minor details are psychological and not crucial to his performance.
Away from the oche, Price’s life also contributes to his improved form. He owns a takeaway called Chippy 501 in his hometown of Markham, where he enjoys helping out and serving customers. Price finds working at the takeaway a good way to take his mind off darts.
“When I’m sat in and bored, I’ll just get in there and get cooking to help out,” he said. “I just love it in there. It’s good to get my mind off everything else as well.”
