[헤럴드경제=장연주 기자] While animal testing results have recently been published showing that high-intensity exercise actually increases body weight, this time, conflicting research results are attracting attention, showing that intense exercise actually helps with weight loss by suppressing hormones that stimulate appetite. In particular, high-intensity exercise has been shown to be much more effective in reducing weight in women.
According to a new study published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society on the 24th (local time), high-intensity exercise was found to be more effective in suppressing hunger than moderate-intensity exercise in healthy adults. In particular, women responded more strongly than men.
This study was conducted on 8 men (average age 43 years) and 6 women (average age 32 years).
After fasting overnight, participants performed a variety of exercises and reported their hunger and desire to eat after the exercise.
The researchers investigated the effect of exercise intensity on ghrelin, a hormone that plays an important role in appetite control. Ghrelin is secreted when you are hungry and stimulates appetite, so it is called the ‘hunger hormone’ or ‘hunger hormone’. Typically, levels are highest before a meal and lowest after a meal.
Ghrelin exists in two forms: acylated ghrelin (AG) and non-acylated ghrelin (DAG). Most of the time, AG (approximately 78%) circulates through the body and affects appetite.
“We found that high-intensity exercise suppressed ghrelin levels more than moderate-intensity exercise,” said Dr. Kara Anderson, a postdoctoral researcher in kinesiology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and the first author of this study. “I felt less hungry than after exercising,” he said.
He explained, “What is noteworthy is that only women showed a significant decrease in acylated ghrelin levels after high-intensity exercise, while men showed no significant decrease.”
“This study suggests that high-intensity exercise may be important in suppressing appetite, which may be particularly useful as part of a weight loss program,” Dr Anderson said.
High-intensity exercise is exercise that makes it difficult to have a conversation, and examples include jogging and running (over 8 km per hour), riding a bicycle uphill, and jumping rope more than 100 times per minute. High-intensity exercise consumes more than six times more energy than sitting still.
In addition, medium-intensity exercise is an exercise intensity that is ‘difficult to do while singing’ and includes fast walking at 4.5 to 8 km per hour, table tennis, and badminton.
Meanwhile, this study contradicts previous research results that found that high-intensity exercise can lead to weight gain.
This June, researchers at the University of Tsukuba in Japan published an animal experiment on rats in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, which found that after a bout of high-intensity exercise, the body’s major stress hormones were disrupted. It was reported that after exercise, activity decreases, body temperature decreases, and weight increases.
