Get Ready for a Healthier Pet: Unlock Free Sterilization Days in Your City
Free Pet Sterilization Program in Medellín: A Key to Responsible Pet Ownership
For animal welfare experts, pet sterilization is a crucial aspect of responsible pet ownership. This procedure helps prevent overpopulation of animals, reduces the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, and contributes to extending the life of pets.
However, the cost of pet sterilization can be a significant barrier for many pet owners. In Medellín, the procedure can cost up to $200,000 for dogs and $160,000 for cats, making it inaccessible to those with limited financial resources.
To address this issue, the Office of the Mayor of Medellín has launched a free pet sterilization program for dogs and cats in various municipalities across the city. The program aims to control the excessive growth of the animal population, improve public health, and promote the welfare of pets. So far, the program has successfully sterilized 1,864 animals, including dogs and cats.
The program is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all citizens, with a focus on vulnerable and hard-to-reach areas where the highest dropout rates occur.
How to Access the Program
To participate in the free pet sterilization program, pet owners can register through the official website medellin.gov.co/esterilizaciones or by calling 604 444 41 44 extension 4.
Once registered, pet owners will receive a summons call to confirm their appointment. Only those who have been notified in advance will be served. Pet owners who registered more than six months ago are advised to re-register to ensure their information is up-to-date.
Requirements for Participation
To be eligible for the program, pets must meet the following requirements:
- Be between 4 months and 7 years old
- Be in optimal health
- Not be in heat, lactating, or pregnant
- Not be from brachycephalic breeds
On the day of the procedure, pet owners must:
- Fast their pet for at least 8 hours
- Bring their cat in a crate and their dog on a lead
- Provide a blanket for each animal
Pet owners must also belong to tiers 1, 2, or 3 and bring a photocopy of their identity card and utility bill on the day of the operation.
A team of experienced veterinarians will perform the procedure safely and professionally, providing instructions for a speedy recovery.
Participating in the program also provides an opportunity for pet owners to receive information and advice on caring for their pets, contributing to the well-being of the community.
