The Indian film industry is a significant soft power, with Bollywood films being the main protagonists. However, other film industries like Kollywood are gaining popularity, focusing on presenting local South Indian culture and lifestyle in depth.
Maharaja (2024) is a prime example of Kollywood’s uniqueness, reflecting the lifestyle of Tamil Nadu and the problem of crime and corruption in India.
The film, directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, tells the story of a father’s quest for justice through a complex, intense, and twist-and-turn plot. Starring Kollywood superstar Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role of Maharaja, a quiet barber, the film also features popular Kollywood actors like Anurag Kashyap and Mamta Mohandas.
Maharaja frankly reveals the social problems of India, including robbery, murder, rape, and corruption.
Crime in India is a significant challenge, despite the government’s efforts to strengthen the legal system and law enforcement. The Narendra Modi government has launched initiatives to improve women’s safety, such as the creation of the Nirbhaya Fund, a fund established in 2013 after the rape incident in New Delhi.
The 2012 New Delhi rape incident was a shocking and unsatisfactory incident in Indian society, sparking massive protests across the country and leading to stricter legal reforms regarding sexual harassment and protection of women’s safety.
The fund supports projects focused on women’s safety, such as installing CCTV in public areas and running a helpline. The government has also revised laws to increase penalties for crimes against women, including speeding up the trial process and creating a special court for rape cases.
Maharaja is a reflection of what Indians face in their daily lives, especially violent crimes against women and injustices in society.
