Get Ready to Explore: iOS 18 Revolutionizes Apple Maps with Hiking Routes, Topographic Maps, and Customized Trails
Apple Maps Introduces New Features for Exploring the World
With the launch of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and watchOS 11, Apple’s Maps app has introduced new features that allow users to view hiking routes, terrain maps, customized routes, and more.
Users who update to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and watchOS 11 can view thousands of hiking trails in U.S. national parks on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. Users can filter routes by route type, length, climb height, etc., and then navigate and hike by route. You can also download designated routes and store them on Apple Watch for easy offline use in mountainous areas. The Maps app also displays shuttle bus schedules for designated national parks. The “Topographic Map” function provides information such as contour lines and hiking trail details, currently supporting the United States and Japan.
Maps app users worldwide can plan and save tailor-made hiking and walking routes. Whether users are walking in a new city or hiking in a nature reserve, they can customize routes according to their personal preferences and download walking routes in advance.
Users can save places, curated guides, national park hikes, and tailor-made routes to the new Places Library on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and add personal notes. The “Enhanced Search” function allows users to browse photos, ratings, price ranges, and other information, and can quickly explore and compare places without leaving the search function. Through the updated “Search here” button in the Maps app, users can also search for places in specific areas, such as restaurants, coffee shops, and gas stations.
