Daylight Saving Time Transition in Belgium
Belgium will transition from daylight saving time to winter time on the weekend of October 26, 2024, from Saturday to Sunday night.
On Sunday at 3 am, the clocks will go back one hour to 2 am, extending sleep by one hour and causing the sun to set earlier in the evening.
This change will extend winter time until March 30, 2025, before daylight saving time returns.
The practice of changing between summer and winter time has been in effect in Belgium since 1977. Initially, these time adjustments were made to save energy, as the population benefited from longer daylight hours.
However, these periodic changes have been widely criticized, with critics accusing them of disrupting biological rhythms.
In 2018, the European Commission proposed abolishing the rotation and keeping it to just one hour. However, in 2021, they indicated that there would be no change “in the coming years”.
