2024 Mayor Cup Badminton Tournament to Kick Off in September
The 2024 Mayor Cup Badminton Tournament is set to begin in September, with participants expected to receive a signed jersey from Leung Wai-hang.
Competition Overview
The “Mayor’s Cup” badminton series competition, founded in 2007, is one of the earliest sports brand events in Guangzhou’s “Mayor’s Cup” series of competitions. As the largest mass badminton event in the city with the widest age coverage and the most far-reaching influence, it attracts badminton enthusiasts from different regions, different professions, and all ages to participate enthusiastically, with a total of 160,000 participants.
Competition Format
This year’s competition will kick off in all districts of the city in mid-September. The “Mayor Cup” badminton series includes badminton competitions for primary, secondary, and college students and mixed team competitions for men and women. The school competition has five groups, including primary school group, junior high school group, secondary vocational school group, high school group, and college group. The mixed team competition has four groups, including youth group (30 years old and below), middle-aged group (31 to 45 years old), middle-aged group (46 to 54 years old), and elderly group (over 55 years old). This year’s competition follows the model of “preliminary competitions in each district + city finals”. The winning teams in each district will meet in the finals, which will be held in November.
National Fitness Points System
It is understood that the Mayor Cup is one of the first domestic events to be included in the national fitness points system by the Chinese Badminton Association. The preliminaries are three-star national fitness events, and the finals are four-star national fitness events. Players will receive corresponding points based on the number of matches and game results, and the points ranking will be announced on the public service platform of the Chinese Badminton Association. The establishment of a points system will help to further enhance the atmosphere of the event, enhance the sense of honor of all participating athletes to strive for the top, and gain a similar experience to professional players.
Promoting Badminton and National Fitness
During the event, the organizing committee will launch a series of “Enter the Community” themed activities to promote and popularize badminton-related knowledge and techniques, enhance national fitness awareness, advocate scientific fitness concepts, and further enrich the cultural and sports life of community residents.
Testimonials from Olympic Athletes
Olympic athlete Leung Wai Hang said, “The Mayor’s Cup has become famous.”
Wu Jiawei, a teacher at Jianshe Liumalu Primary School, was Liang Weikeng’s physical education teacher when he was in primary school. He was mainly responsible for badminton. “I have participated in the ‘Mayor’s Cup’ for many years. Not only did I participate in the competition myself, but I also led the school’s badminton team to participate.” Wu Jiawei revealed that Liang Weikeng showed excellent badminton talent since he was a child. “Liang Weikeng started participating in the competition in the first grade of primary school and helped the school win three consecutive championships in the ‘Mayor’s Cup’.”
