Get Ready to Take Off: Hong Kong’s Thrilling 10km Airport Run Returns on November 17
Hong Kong International Airport to Host Three-Runway System Ten-Kilometer International Race
The “Hong Kong International Airport·Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon: Three-runway System Ten-Kilometer International Race” will take place on November 17 at the airport runway, celebrating the three runways of Hong Kong International Airport becoming fully operational by the end of the year and the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. This event marks a significant milestone, as the last time a marathon was held on the runway was in 1998, during the “Standard Chartered ’98 New Airport Marathon”.
The event will feature multiple categories, with a total quota of approximately 12,000 participants, including a 10-kilometer race, 5-kilometer race, 3-kilometer race, and a 10-kilometer wheelchair race. The “Women’s Elite Ten Kilometer International Race” will also be held at the same venue. The starting and finishing points of the event will be located on the middle runway of the airport, within the restricted area. After registering at AsiaWorld-Expo and completing a security check, participants will be transported to and from the track via a special vehicle arranged by the organizer.
Registration for the 10-kilometer challenge group event is now open to qualified runners. The registration period began on September 18 at 7:00 pm, and results will be notified via email on September 22. Interested participants can register on the conference website: www.3rsrun.com. Runners and airport employees who participated in the “Standard Chartered ’98 New Airport Marathon” will have priority registration, while public lottery registration will begin on September 23 at 2 pm.
Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Airport Authority, Cheung Lee Ka-wai, stated that the Hong Kong International Airport’s three-runway system projects are progressing steadily, with the three runways expected to be fully operational by the end of the year. This will enhance the airport’s passenger and cargo handling capabilities, further solidifying Hong Kong’s status as a global aviation hub. The Airport Authority hopes that this event will provide a rare opportunity for the public to compete on the runway before it is put back into operation and witness this historical moment together.
Guan Qi, chairman of the Tianjin Federation, noted that the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon has long been a beloved event among Hong Kong residents. The “10-kilometer race” is the most popular category, making this commemorative event a unique chance for citizens to experience the thrill of running on the airport runway. The event also promotes diversity and inclusion, with various categories allowing people of different physical abilities to participate.
The current women’s world record for 10 kilometers stands at 30 minutes and 01 seconds. Wu Yuhao, administrative director of the Tianzong Federation, mentioned that this is an international competition with a bonus structure, and world-class female runners are being invited to participate in the 10-kilometer elite event. Female runners who have completed designated events within 40 minutes can also register. High-level male runners are also invited to participate, with announcements expected in the coming weeks.
Wu Yuhao added that the event will take place between 8:10 am and 1:30 pm, with over 10,000 runners entering the airport at different times. As a result, there is no need to worry about the event affecting transportation capacity. The organizer has been in contact with the MTR, Transport Department, and bus companies to increase their frequency during certain periods.
