Gethin Jones Takes on Chef de Mission Role for Team Wales

Gethin Jones, a television personality, will take on the leadership role as Chef de Mission for Team Wales at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Jones, 47, born in Cardiff, will be responsible for leading, supporting, and representing the Welsh national team during the multi-sport event.
Jones shared the announcement on instagram, posting images of himself with Welsh athletes. He previously worked as an attache for Team Wales at the 2018 Gold Coast Games.The 2026 commonwealth games, featuring 10 sports, are scheduled for July 23 to Aug. 2.
“I am beyond proud to share that I have been appointed ‘Chef de Mission’ for @team_wales for @glasgow_2026. Mae’n anrhydedd enfawr. And no… I won’t be the designated team cook!” Jones said.
Jones explained that the Chef de Mission role involves leading, supporting, and representing the national team at major sporting events like the commonwealth Games. His past experience includes serving as Team Wales Attaché at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, which motivated him to pursue further involvement. He subsequently studied High Performance, Governance, Leadership and Culture and gained experience with organizations like the NFL, WRU, the Rugby League World Cup, London 2012 and Rio 2016.
“If I was on a mission I can’t think of anyone else I’d want to head it up! You’re so perfect for this gig. Massive congrats & good luck to you & @team_wales for Glasgow 2026,” said radio presenter Sara Cox.
Jazz Carlin, a Team GB swimmer and Welsh medalist, also offered congratulations. A fan commented on Jones’s enthusiasm and leadership qualities, noting his dedication to the role.
The 10 sports featured in the Glasgow games include track cycling, weightlifting, swimming, judo, netball, artistic gymnastics, boxing, bowls, athletics, and basketball.
