Gianni Infantino to Run for Re-election as FIFA President in March 2027

The upcoming presidential election will take place at the 77th FIFA Congress in Rabat, Morocco, on March 18, 2027.

Re-Election Plans Confirmed Despite Growing Pressure

Infantino’s intention to run for another term remains unchanged despite mounting pressure within international football administration, according to a USA Today report citing a FIFA spokesperson.

“The FIFA president announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election,” a FIFA spokesperson stated, as reported by USA Today.

The confirmation follows turbulence over Infantino’s leadership. USA Today reports that Infantino has faced increasing pressure following the collapse of a controversial plan to sell a portion of FIFA’s operations to private investors. Three major confederations—Concacaf, UEFA, and the AFC—have expressed doubts regarding his leadership, raising questions about whether he can survive the political fallout, though individual nations within those bodies have voiced support.

Contrasting Support Levels Leading Up to the Vote

The political landscape surrounding FIFA leadership has shifted significantly in recent months. According to USA Today, Infantino’s re-election appeared to be a mere formality as recently as July, when The Guardian reported he had secured the backing of more than 200 of FIFA’s 211 member associations ahead of the World Cup final.

However, the possibility of a contested election is growing. Potential challengers aiming to run against Infantino include Concacaf president Victor Montagliani and Asian Football Confederation president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, according to USA Today. All candidates wishing to challenge for the presidency must officially declare their intent by Nov. 18.

Financial Growth and Development Programs Highlighted

During the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver, Canada, Infantino addressed the 211 member associations and thanked them for their decade of support, pointing to major governance changes and investments.

“I want to tell you first – the 211 (FIFA) Member Associations – that I will be (a) candidate for the election of FIFA President next year,” Infantino told delegates, according to Inside FIFA. “Thank you for your support over the last 10 years, your support today, your work, your progress, your love for the game, your commitment, and your passion.”

According to Inside FIFA, the organization has invested USD 5 billion into football development over the past ten years through the FIFA Forward Programme. Investments for the upcoming fourth cycle spanning 2027 to 2031 are set to increase by 20% to USD 2.7 billion. Infantino also highlighted the FIFA Clearing House, which has distributed over USD 500 million to smaller amateur clubs by ensuring a portion of transfer fees reaches the clubs where players began their careers.
