Marine researchers in New Zealand have discovered an exceptionally large black coral, estimated to be between 300 and 400 years old. The coral, scientifically identified as Antipathella fiordensis, was found in the waters of Fiordland National Park, a region known for its unique underwater ecosystems.

The discovery, made by researchers from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, is significant due to the coral’s size. Measuring four meters high and 4.5 meters wide, it is believed to be among the largest black corals ever recorded in New Zealand waters. Professor James Bell, a marine biologist at the university, described the find as absolutely huge.

Despite its name, black coral isn’t actually black in color. Its skeleton is black, but the coral itself appears white due to the bright white polyps – the coral’s feeding structures – that branch out from the skeleton. These polyps resemble feathers, giving the coral a tree-like appearance. Researchers noted the coral provides a vital habitat for other marine life, acting as little oases of life and biodiversity.

The Importance of Black Coral

Black corals are slow-growing species, making older, larger specimens particularly valuable. These larger corals serve as crucial breeding stock for the species, ensuring its continued survival. The discovery highlights the importance of identifying and protecting these significant individuals.

Fiordland’s unique environment contributes to the presence of black corals at relatively shallow depths. Unlike many other areas around New Zealand where black corals typically reside in deeper waters, Fiordland’s abundant rainfall and tannin-rich waters create conditions that allow these corals to thrive closer to the surface. Tannins, leached from the surrounding forest, stain the freshwater brown and create a layer that blocks some sunlight, resulting in medium-light conditions where seaweed struggles to grow, but animal-dominated reefs, like those built by black coral, can flourish.

Threats to Coral Populations

The discovery comes at a critical time for coral reefs worldwide. Over the past four decades, the world has lost approximately half of its coral reefs, and black corals are facing increasing threats from several factors. Rising ocean temperatures and ocean acidification, both consequences of climate change, pose significant risks to coral health. Destructive fishing practices, particularly bottom trawling, also contribute to coral decline.

In January 2026, it was reported that a bottom trawling vessel in New Zealand waters pulled up six tonnes of protected coral in a single trawl – the worst documented instance of coral destruction in the country in over a decade. This incident underscores the need for stricter regulations and enforcement to protect vulnerable coral ecosystems.

Conservation Efforts and Future Research

Recognizing the importance of these large black corals, researchers are urging anyone who encounters similarly sized specimens to report them. The protected status of the species under the Wildlife Act reinforces the need for conservation efforts. The researchers hope to gain a better understanding of the distribution and abundance of large black corals in the region.

Professor Bell, with 25 years of experience as a marine biologist, emphasized the rarity of this find, stating that Here’s by far the largest black coral he has ever observed. Most black corals encountered during dives are significantly smaller, typically less than two to three meters tall.

The research team utilized a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to capture footage of the coral at depth, allowing for detailed observation and documentation without disturbing the fragile ecosystem. This technology is crucial for studying these deep-water environments and understanding the complex interactions within them.

The discovery serves as a reminder of the hidden biodiversity within New Zealand’s fiords and the importance of continued research and conservation efforts to protect these unique marine environments for future generations.
