Giant Bicycles Founder King Liu Dies at 93
King Liu, the founder of Taiwanese bicycle manufacturer Giant Bicycles, has died at the age of 93, according to announcements from Giant Group. He passed away peacefully in the early hours of February 16, 2026.
Born in 1934, Liu founded Giant Group in Taiwan in 1972. Initially, the company manufactured bicycles for other well-known brands. He wasn’t a cyclist himself when he started the company, but later in life embraced the activity, riding around Taiwan at age 73 and completing a journey from Beijing to Shanghai at age 75.
Liu’s vision extended beyond manufacturing. He was a key figure in the development of Taiwan’s YouBike system, a public bicycle-sharing program that has transformed urban transportation in the country. This initiative reflects his commitment to promoting cycling culture and accessibility.
Described by Giant Group as not only a founder but also a leader attentive to those around him, Liu’s influence shaped the company into a global force in the cycling industry. He was known for his manufacturing expertise, which was instrumental in establishing Giant as a leading bicycle producer.
Liu’s journey from a young boy in Sandia Township, Taichung, to the head of a multinational corporation is described as a story of “flipping MIT” – transforming “Made in Taiwan” from a symbol of low-cost production to one of quality and innovation. He helped elevate Taiwan’s manufacturing reputation on the world stage.
News of Liu’s passing has prompted an outpouring of remembrance, with many acknowledging his significant contributions to the cycling world and his impact on Taiwan’s economic development. He is survived by his family and leaves behind a legacy of innovation, leadership, and a passion for cycling.
In 2024, Liu had previously overcome a battle with stomach cancer, reportedly serving as an inspiration to others.
