Italy’s Healthcare Divide: A Growing Crisis of Regional Disparity
A stark new analysis reveals a deepening crisis in Italy’s National Health Service (NHS), with critically important regional disparities in access to essential care. Just 13 of Italy’s 20 regions are currently meeting the required standards for providing these services – known as Essential Levels of Assistance (LEA) – either free of charge or through co-payment. Veneto leads the nation in performance, but the picture across the country is deeply uneven.
The findings, released by the Gimbe Foundation following a review of the Ministry of Health’s 2023 ‘Monitoring of the Lea’ report, underscore a troubling trend: the gap between the north and south of Italy isn’t just persisting, it’s widening. Only three southern regions – Puglia, campania, and Sardinia – are currently delivering on the full scope of essential care.
