Gio Ruggiero secured his first ARCA Menards Series victory at Kansas Speedway on Saturday, April 18, 2026, after a late-race incident involving Dystany Spurlock reshuffled the running order and cleared his path to the front.

Ruggiero, driving the No. 17 Toyota for Tricon Garage, was running in third place with just a few laps remaining when he attempted to lap Spurlock, who was making her national ARCA series debut in the No. 66 Chevrolet. Contact between the two vehicles sent Spurlock spinning sideways into the infield grass, though she managed to regain control and continue without sustaining damage.

The caution brought out by the incident bunched the field and reset the restart with Ruggiero inheriting the lead. He held off a late challenge from Jack Wood, who had been running second before the caution and appeared poised to win prior to the incident, to take the checkered flag by 0.384 seconds.

“It wasn’t how I wanted to win it, but we took advantage of the situation,” Ruggiero said in his post-race interview. “We had a fast car all day, and when the caution came out, we stayed focused and executed on the restart. Credit to the team for putting me in a position to win.”

Spurlock, a development driver from the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program, finished the race in 14th place after recovering from the spin. She expressed frustration but remained optimistic about her debut. “I was just trying to hold my line and get through traffic,” Spurlock said. “I didn’t see him coming until it was too late. It’s tough, but I learned a lot out there today, and I’ll be back.”

The incident occurred on the backstretch with approximately eight laps remaining. Ruggiero, attempting to lap the slower-moving Spurlock, made contact with her rear bumper, causing her vehicle to rotate sharply. Although she avoided a hard impact with the wall, the spin collected enough momentum to bring out the yellow flag, prompting NASCAR officials to deploy the caution.

Under the caution, Ruggiero’s team elected not to pit, keeping him on track for the restart. When the field came back to green with two laps to go, Ruggiero used the inside line off Turn 4 to maintain position ahead of Wood, who had been running in second place before the caution and was attempting to challenge on the outside.

Wood, driving for Rev Racing, finished second, marking his best result of the season to date. He acknowledged the role of the caution in reshaping the finish. “We had a shot to win it before that,” Wood said. “But Gio drove smart on the restart and drove it home. Congrats to him.”

The win marks Ruggiero’s first in the ARCA Menards Series and his second top-five finish of the 2026 season. He entered the race ranked eighth in the driver standings with two top-10 finishes in the first five events. The victory moves him up to sixth in the points standings, 34 points behind the series leader.

Tricon Garage, which fields entries in both the ARCA Menards Series and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, celebrated its first ARCA win of the year. Team owner Joe Tricon praised Ruggiero’s composure. “Gio stayed calm under pressure and did what he needed to do when it mattered,” Tricon said. “This win builds confidence for the rest of the season.”

Spurlock’s debut continues a season-long effort by ARCA and NASCAR to increase diversity in motorsports through developmental programs. While her race ended earlier than hoped due to the incident, completing the event and gaining experience at a 1.5-mile oval represents progress in her development curve.

The next ARCA Menards Series event is scheduled for May 2, 2026, at Dover Motor Speedway, where Ruggiero will look to build on his momentum and improve his standing in the championship chase.
