Nico Denz of Germany seized a solo breakaway victory in Stage 18 of the Giro d’Italia, providing Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe with a much-needed win after their general classification (GC) hopes were dashed. The Giro d’Italia stage win marks a significant moment in the competition.
Following the withdrawal of Red Bull’s leading contenders, Jai Hindley and Primož Roglič, due to injuries sustained in crashes, Denz stepped up to deliver a stylish performance in what was the Giro’s final transition stage.This Giro d’Italia stage win underscores the depth of the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team.
Denz was part of a 35-rider group that broke away early in the hilly section of the race. He then joined a smaller,more select group of 11 riders. With 11 kilometers remaining, Denz launched a solo attack, ultimately securing his third career Giro stage victory.
Mirco Maestri of Polti-VisitMalta finished second, approximately 50 seconds behind Denz. Edward Planckaert of Alpecin-Deceuninck took third place.
The main GC group arrived more than 10 minutes later. Juan Ayuso of UAE Team Emirates-XRG was not among them. Ayuso, already struggling with a knee injury and a bee sting from Stage 17, abandoned the race after only 30 kilometers.
