Tarling, an Ineos Grenadiers rider, was considered a favorite after winning the race’s first time trial. though, the 21-year-old could not match Hoole’s pace on the lucca to Pisa course. Simon Yates of Visma-Lease a Bike moved up two spots to fourth in the overall standings after finishing 23rd.
“I’m so happy and there are so many people I need to thank. I just can’t believe it,” Hoole said, noting the advantage he had with dry roads before rain affected later riders.
Primoz Roglic of Slovenia, a race favorite, finished 17th, one minute and 15 seconds behind Hoole. Roglic, who had lost time after a crash, gained ground on his main competitors and now sits fifth one minute and 18 seconds behind Del Toro. The Giro d’Italia continues to deliver surprises.
