Wout van Aert of Visma-Lease a Bike seized a thrilling sprint victory in Stage 9 of the Giro d’Italia, capping a remarkable comeback. The Belgian cyclist powered to the front in the final stretch, narrowly defeating Isaac del Toro. Del Toro’s impressive performance, however, earned him the coveted lead in the general classification.
The pivotal moment occurred with just under 50 kilometers remaining when Del Toro launched an attack on the gravel, initiating a breakaway. Van Aert and Egan Bernal of Ineos Grenadiers joined him. Bernal eventually fell back, but Van Aert remained, ultimately overtaking Del Toro in the closing 400 meters at Piazza del Campo.
The stage win marked an emotional high point for the 30-year-old Van Aert,who has been battling back from a knee injury. Simon yates,a British rider,finished fifth in the stage and currently holds sixth place overall.
