Carapaz Attack Shakes Up Giro d’italia; Del Toro Defends Lead

The Giro d’Italia witnessed a dramatic shift Tuesday as Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) launched a powerful attack, significantly impacting the general classification. The Carapaz attack came wiht approximately 7 kilometers remaining in the mountain stage, putting race leader Isaac del Toro under immense pressure.
Del toro, 21, struggled but managed to retain the pink jersey by a narrow margin after a grueling stage through the Alps. Despite the effort, Isaac del Toro now leads Simon Yates (Visma-Lease a Bike) by just 26 seconds, with Carapaz trailing by an additional 5 seconds.
UAE Emirates-XRG faced a mixed day.While Del Toro persevered,Juan Ayuso,the team’s co-leader,dropped out of contention,losing over 13 minutes.
Carapaz, the 2019 Giro champion, gained significant ground in the GC battle with his aggressive move.
Derek Gee (Israel PremierTech) remains in contention, sitting fourth 1 minute and 31 seconds back.

Earlier, Primož Roglič abandoned the race following a crash, dealing a blow to Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe.
Scaroni Victorious in Stage 16
Christian Scaroni of XDS-Astana claimed victory, with teammate Lorenzo Fortunato finishing second. The Italian duo were part of a large breakaway that formed early in the stage. They outmaneuvered Jefferson Cepeda (Movistar) on the final climb.
Giulio Pellizzarri (Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe) finished third, providing a positive note for the team after Roglič’s withdrawal.
“I arrived to the line with nothing, I have no regrets,” Del Toro said. “I did everything that I could today. Every moment got more painful.”
“We knew it was a very key stage in the Giro,” Carapaz said.“I’ve worked hard, I’ve shown it, everything it’s cost me to come back here and be here once again… We will try it all the way to Rome.”
The stage featured four categorized climbs and nearly 5,000 meters of elevation gain. Rain added to the difficulty, causing multiple crashes.
Josh Tarling also abandoned the race after a crash. Alessio Martinelli (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) was hospitalized after falling into a ravine but was conscious and without fractures.
EF Education-EastPost initiated aggressive racing on the Santa Barbara climb, splitting the peloton. Arensman and Ayuso were dropped, while Del Toro, Yates, Gee, and Carapaz remained in the lead group.
