Updated May 31, 2025
Simon Yates delivered a dominant performance in the Giro d’Italia’s penultimate stage, snatching the overall lead and the coveted pink jersey from Isaac del Toro. This victory positions Yates to claim his second Grand Tour title.
Entering the 20th stage, del Toro, of Mexico, held a 43-second advantage over Richard Carapaz, while Yates trailed by one minute, 21 seconds. The stage included the Colle delle Finestre, the race’s highest point, where Yates faltered in 2018.
This time, Yates, 32, overcame the climb, surging ahead of del Toro, 21, and Carapaz. Yates not only erased del toro’s lead but established a one minute, 41-second advantage over his rivals at the summit.
Aided by his Visma-Lease a Bike teammate wout van Aert, who was part of an earlier breakaway, Yates extended his lead over the final 20 kilometers. Chris Harper, an Australian rider for Jayco-Alula, won the stage, with Yates finishing third, one minute and 57 seconds behind.
Yates, overcome with emotion, embraced his team after the finish. Del Toro, riding for UAE Team Emirates, crossed the line five minutes later.
Yates now leads del Toro by three minutes and 56 seconds, with Carapaz in third, heading into the final stage in Rome.
“I’m not really an emotional person but I couldn’t hold back the tears,” Yates saeid.
“Its something I’ve worked towards year after year and I’ve had a lot of setbacks but I’ve finally managed to pull if off,” he added, reflecting on his Giro d’Italia role.
Yates’s triumph marks him as the third British cyclist to win the Giro d’Italia, following Chris Froome (2018) and Tao Geoghegan Hart (2020). He demonstrated extraordinary cycling performance, securing his place in history.
