Gironde Experiences Brief Respite from Storms with Unseasonably Warm Temperatures

After more than two weeks of severe weather, the Gironde department in southwestern France is enjoying a temporary break from the relentless storms. Following Storm Nils, then Storm Pedro, and subsequent widespread flooding – particularly in the Sud-Gironde – the region is basking in sunshine and milder temperatures.

The change in weather began on February 21st and 22nd, 2026, with residents shedding their winter coats as temperatures began to rise. Forecasts indicate this pleasant weather will continue for several days.

Temperatures to Exceed 20 Degrees Celsius

In Bordeaux, the return of sunshine has brought people outdoors. Monday, February 23rd, will see temperatures ranging from 12 to 16 degrees Celsius across the department, with a slightly veiled sky. However, Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be even warmer.

Around the Arcachon Basin and the Médoc peninsula, temperatures are predicted to climb above 20 degrees Celsius during the afternoons. Bordeaux itself is expected to experience similar warmth, with Wednesday anticipated to be the warmest day. According to Météo France, the sun is shining brightly, with maximum temperatures of 24 degrees Celsius forecast for Marcheprime.

Rain Returns at the End of the Week

This period of calm will be short-lived, as rain is expected to return on Friday, February 27th, across the entire Gironde department, bringing with it a significant drop in temperatures. However, after several days of rainfall and natural disasters, the sunshine offers a welcome, albeit brief, respite.

The Azores high-pressure system is responsible for the current calm conditions, having pushed stormy weather away from the region, according to reports. The warmer air is originating from North Africa and Spain, contributing to the unseasonably high temperatures.

While temperatures reached 35°C in Bordeaux last week, according to web search results, the current forecast does not predict temperatures reaching that level. However, the warmth is still notable given the time of year.

The recent European heatwaves of 2022, which saw temperatures exceeding 40°C in some areas, serve as a reminder of the potential for extreme weather events on the continent. While the current situation in Gironde is not comparable in intensity, it highlights the increasing frequency of unusual weather patterns.

Residents are advised to enjoy the mild weather while it lasts, as the return of rain and cooler temperatures is imminent. The brief period of sunshine provides a much-needed break after weeks of challenging weather conditions.
