Rao’s decision to blend animation and live-action stems from a desire to reconnect with the collaborative energy of filmmaking. After dedicating years to the solitary world of animation, she expressed a longing to work with actors and cinematographers on set.
“The story evolved in a way that it’s real and the protagonist goes into a painting and that’s where my animation starts and he comes back,” Rao explained. “So, I have a balance between the two. It’s in the financing stage… The moment the financing comes in within two years the film should be done, should be out.”

From ‘October’ Actress to Animation Director: Gitanjali Rao’s Unique Journey
gitanjali Rao, the acclaimed director behind the upcoming half live-action, half animation feature film, has taken an unconventional path to filmmaking. While many directors hone their craft through years of assisting established names, Rao’s journey began with a starring role in the 2018 Bollywood hit, “October.”
“There is this role for you. Will you do this?” Rao recalls Shoojit Sircar, the director of “October,” asking her. “There are times where everything comes together and you are a fool to say no. I did ‘October’ and I pursued my film. It took much longer to finish and by that time everybody knew me as the ‘October’ actress.”
Rao’s foray into acting wasn’t driven by a desire for stardom. Instead, it served a practical purpose – funding her true passion: animation filmmaking.
“It’s difficult to finance years and years of scriptwriting advancement,” she explains. “So I was doing acting, not as a career prospect, but as engaging projects and it was giving me some amount of money.”
Rao’s acting experiences proved invaluable, allowing her to collaborate with renowned directors like Aparna Sen and gain insights into the filmmaking process.
“I figured out through acting I can work with other directors and understand how they work and I use a lot of acting in my animation films,” she says. “So whatever I learnt as acting is actually both as an actor and in animation.”
Rao’s unique journey highlights the diverse paths one can take to achieve their filmmaking dreams. Her upcoming film promises to be a testament to her talent and dedication, blending live-action and animation in a captivating narrative.
